James White Award Goes West

James White Award Goes WestThe James White Award for 2001 has been won by David Levine, a US fan based in Portland Oregon. His short story Nucleon, was chosen from an entry of over 100 manuscripts. The award was announced at a ceremony in Belfast on November 3. Levine could not attend but by one of those coincidences that makes life so interesting, Dublin-based fan Lynne Ann Morse is a long time friend and so accepted the award on his behalf.

Levine did make a virtual appearance however. He recorded a message of thanks and sent it to James Bacon via the Internet.

Levine is already well known in fannish circles as the editor of Bento, a critically acclaimed fanzine. He is a graduate of the esteemed Clarion workshop and has sold a number of his short stories. He works in the IT sector. (Coincidence No. 2: your editor made use of some software written by Levine while attending the Worldcon in Chicago last year).

His winning story, Nucleon, is in the tradition of the 'magic shop' stories that are a well established subset of the genre. Judge Michael Carroll said that it stood out from the very start and Peggy White described it as a story that James would have liked had he been alive.

The James White Award for 2002 is now open and full details can be found at the award's Website.
