Bertie Ahern Snubs Octocon but Crazy Dog Comes to Rescue
Thu 26th Sep 2002
Bertie Ahern, the Irish Taoiseach (prime minister), has set the date for the referendum on the Nice Treaty for Saturday, October 19, the same day as Octocon starts. This has led to speculation that the Irish leader is not giving the science fiction community the support it deserves. The government press office refused to comment.
Meanwhile the Green Party leader Trevor Sargent said the Taoiseach should not engage in name-calling and respect the views of the Irish people.
Octocon chairman, Mr. James Brophy told LostCarPark, "It's a difficult blow, but we’re sure we can overcome it." He is rumoured to be negotiating a deal to have Octocon posters displayed in polling stations. "They've got cool t-shirts!" he added.
Fortunately, Crazy Dog Audio Theatre have come to the convention's aid, sneaking a full 30-second ad for Octocon into a recent episode of their live radio show, "Crazy Dog Live". Crazy Dog spin doctor, Roger Gregg tried to smoth relations between the sides, but described both as "deeply entrenched".
