Apparently the Sunday Tribune reported on a plaque someone noticed on O'Connell Bridge, in memory of a priest by the name of Fr Pat Noise, who died when his carriage plunged into the Liffey "in suspicious circumstances".
Now Dublin Corporation say as it's unauthorised, and they can find no historical records of the man nor the event, they want to remove it. The plaque is actually filling a hole left by the Millenium Clock fiasco (better remembered as "The Chime in the Slime"). It must have cost a fair bit to make as it's a proper bronze plaque, and it seems silly to spend public money removing it just to leave an ugly hole again.
I suggest if you get the chance, you should get down to O'Connell Bridge and have a look while it's still there.

Ahh! "The Chime in the Slime", oh how I remember it, sitting just under the water with it's big digatl clocks ticking down towards the new year (gosh, was it so long ago?)
I always had a bad feeling about it, and now you tell me about a good priest who died on the same spot... _________________ I am a cranky bastard, yearning for peace and enlightenment. |
